Sea Ice

Just in case you are worried sick about sea ice. Compare the extent of sea ice yesterday with the status at the same date last year.

The key on the left indicates the colours which represent the concentration, darker purple being more concentrated. You can compare various dates by going to the site and changing the dates to see how the two summers compare day after day, or compare this year with any previous year back to 1979. Compare for example July 30 1990 with July 30 2008. Puts it in some perspective.

Further :

In most years, there are open waters in the area north of the archipelago in July month. Studies from this year however show that the area is covered by ice, the Meteorological Institute writes in a press release.

In mid-July, the research vessel Lance and the Swedish ship MV Stockholm got stuck in ice in the area and needed help from the Norwegian Coast Guard to get loose.

The ice findings from the area spurred surprise among the researchers, many of whom expect the very North Pole to be ice-free by September this year. [link to source]

And regards sea level rise- more evidence to the contrary.
