Did you read Zsuzsi Gartner’s review in the Books section of the Globe and Mail of May21st? First of all it referred to a bullshit detector. People in Wolfville could sure use one of those as they seem to be oblivious to the heaps of it lying about.

Of more interest were the two books she reviewed  – Your Call is Important to Us: The Truth About Bullshit by Laura Penny and On Bullshit by Harry G. Frankfurt.

Penny says “Bullshit thrives on the soft bigotry of low expectations” Boy, do we ever agree with that. She also says ” I am not a problem solver. I am a crank.” As self described cranks we have an immediate bond although we have to say we would prefer to be solving problems!

Truth is something municipal politicians need a closer acquaintance with and we are interested to note that Frankfurt in his book says that “It is …this lack of
connection to a concern with truth-this indifference to how things really are- that I regard as the essence of bullshit”
The bullshitter, he says, does  not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and oppose himself to it. He pays no attention to it at all. By virtue of this, bullshit is the greater enemy of the truth than lies are.”

These are two books we want to read! Thanks Zsuzsi.
